Each Internet or network user receives traffic at its specific address on the network or IP address. This is like mailing a letter without an address on it and expecting it to arrive where you want it to arrive.

  • What is the difference between a dynamically assigned IP address and a static/fixed IP address?

All you need is a network capable computer or handheld. In a wireless environment, this would be a WiFi certified 802.11b card and your portable device, be it a laptop, tablet or handheld. Many laptops shipped today already have WiFi cards installed. For a list of qualified vendors, please visit the Web site of the Wireless Ethernet Compatibility Association at www.weca.net.

  • What is the difference between a dynamically assigned IP address and a static/fixed IP address?

This is a technical question much beyond the scope of a typical user. Most Internet users will have their computers set up to obtain an IP Address via DHCP or dynamically. For those who don't, they are setup to use a specific IP Address or static address, usually configured by corporate IT staff. EthoStream's Hospitality Network is configured so that even user's with static IP Addresses will work correctly on our networks thus not necessitating a change to a user's configuration. In some rare cases, a user may need to configure their machine to receive an IP Address via DHCP in order for the Internet connection to work correctly.

  • How do I obtain an IP address?

EthoStream provides its' network users IP Addresses via DHCP. Most users will not have to change anything in order for their computer to work correctly. Even users configured to use static IP addresses will be able to browse the Internet due to EthoStream's dynamic routing capabilities. In certain rare cases, users will need to manually configure their machines to receive an address via DHCP in order for the connection to work correctly. EthoStream also provides the ability to obtain a public IP Address dynamically via the web browser for rare situations when a user's VPN requires a direct Internet connection.

  • Is my VPN software compatible with EthoStream's service?

Most Virtual Private Network (VPN) software running on a notebook computer configured to obtain an IP from a DHCP server will work with EthoStream's network. EthoStream also provides the ability to dynamically provide publicly routable IP Addresses for rare instances when a VPN requires such.

  • How do I connect using my VPN software?

You can connect using your VPN software exactly the same as you would from any other broadband connection. However, you must first follow the authentication procedure within the portal. To get to this page, simply open a Web browser and go to a public Web site; you will be automatically redirected to the EthoStream Portal Page. Once you have browsed to this page, you may follow the directions to become authenticated. Once authenticated, you may open any client application you wish to access the Internet.

  • Why might I need to change my SSID, and how can I do so?

An SSID (Service Set Identifier) or Network Name is an identifier providing a unique signature for a wireless network. EthoStream provides an SSID of 'ethostream' in each property within its Hospitality Network. Your wireless hardware may automatically detect this SSID or you may use the Scan Network feature within the configuration application provided with your wireless hardware to attach to the network.

Customer Testimonials

"In addition to stable hardware, the primary reason we use EthoStream for our hotels' wireless networks, is about service. Last week, Dominic, one of the EthoStream technicians spent a great deal of time with our bandwidth provider to solve a problem that was not even related to the EthoStream network. It's that kind of commitment to service that keeps EthoStream on top of our vendor list."
